A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE.

Regular readers of MG will remember our friends on the loge, L and M. M. had been a plan holder since before she even knew L. It was from them that I first got the idea to buy a plan, that it was at all within the realm of possibility. They were also Tuesday-Friday planholders.

They are ENORMOUS sports fans. The type of people who would buy World Series tickets no matter who the team was because they’d just like to see the game.

When we emailed to ask them what they had gotten in the on-sale, imagine our surprise to receive this:

Actually we ended up doing nothing. We passed.

We had zero interest in the 15 game plans. No desire to be sitting in the upper deck against the Nationals on a Wed in August if there was no pot of gold at the end (playoff tickets guarantee and not a pre-sale password)

We were pretty sure (before the plan announcement) that were going to grab a half season plan in a good section, similar to a loge-type level. We were going to go with the Excelsior Club level tickets but then saw the “alternate location” for post season tickets. The other thing about the Mets (is) no predetermined seat location, but it is best available at the time you log in based on your seniority bucket. (Yankees gave or will provide the seat location ahead of time.)

Our increasing problem over the past few seasons is that our work/life schedules are getting harder and harder to plan around and commitments can not be changed. And weekend plans are no good for us as we travel a a lot. So we didn’t want to buy a 40 game plan and then have difficulty or worrying about dumping the tickets.**

So in the end, we figure it is better for us, based on the shitty post-season offerings and our scheduling commitments is that we will still probably go to 20 or so games, but will buy the tickets, either on ticket drops or secondary market during the year so we can go to the games that we want to go to and not because we have to go to, and arriving in the 5th inning, because we were unable to dump the tickets.

Dear Mets: you just lost money AGAIN. And a lot more than you lost from us.

I think that the Mets sold a lot less of the 15 game plans then they thought they would. A lot of people bought plans for the post-season rights. Removing the post-season rights made the commitment much less attractive, even for us. TBF and I feel confident enough in our abilities to take a chance in the post-season land grab, so we felt like it was still an okay option, but I’ll see how we’re going to feel come fall (if it’s even necessary, which at this point I seriously doubt).

--
**I want to note here that, unlike the prevailing attitude all over what seems like the rest of the Mets internet, like us, they do not sell tickets at a markup or with a goal of profit. (And if you think that’s a judgment, that’s because IT IS.)

Posted at 11:59 AM

I certainly sympathize here. I bought in to the Saturday plan at Shea in 2002 simply to get a guarantee on post-season tickets. I was convinced that Alomar and Vaughn would push us over the edge (too bad they pushed us the wrong way). The pre-sale only for post season tickets is a definite let-down, as is the mix of weekday games in the weekend packages. I live slightly upstate and when I come to a game, I come for the whole thing. In order to get to a weekday game, I need to leave work by 3:30 PM - not always easy to do. It also gets me home very late to get up for work the next day.
Unfortunately, I’m sure the Mets found plenty of other ticket buyers to make up for your friends. Maybe things will change if sales don’t meet expectations, but somehow I doubt that will occur.

Time will tell if the Mets made the wrong decision.  They definitely lost money with me as I am spending 2/3 of what I spent last season.  Then again, I know of people who have purchased three different 15-game plans ranging from 2 to 6 seats.

It will be very interesting how the 40 game plans sell.  While the 40-game plans price out many fans, there are a lot of fans who take issue with sitting in the “upper deck”.  Some of those fans will take a bite at the 40-game apple in order to avoid the Promenade level and also get a guarantee of tickets to every other postseason game.

At the end of the day, the Mets know that Citi Field will be sold out in 2009/2010 and thus they have created partial plans designed to move their least desirable inventory (hence bundling weekday games with the Friday, Saturday and Sunday Plans and offering a postseason guarantee only for their 40-game plans which are (conveniently for the Mets) offered in the pricer sections of Citi Field.

Posted by Rickey24  on  12/05  at  02:38 PM

This is a bit of a side comment, but it occured to me that the reason my opportunity to buy tickets so late (next Friday, December 12) is not because I was a Sunday ticketholder since 2007 but rather that I took my money out of the Mets coffers. Could I be right? Did everybody that’s bought keep their postseason deposits with the Mets to use for 2009 tickets?

Also, I can’t help but wonder what will be left when next Friday arrives. If the seats are high up and way out in the outfield, I know we won’t be spending $600 on being able to see fly balls and the occasional home run. If I end up farther out than Ryan Church, I’m going to do what L and M did.

After all, we bought a HDTV and have watched enough Mets games to do the cheers at home. Even though we’d rather make the 3 hour round trip train ride to Shea with our usual Sunday bagels and iced coffee.

My first MLB experience was with the Twins, and it was terrific. The Mets, though, got me into baseball and made me love and understand the game more than I ever had before. But now, it’s like the Mets I love are doing a slow fade, replaced by assholes who only care about B&T;folks who don’t know anyone other than David Wright, Jose Reyes, and the Carloses (no offense to those players).

If Jerry Manuel had a say in all this, it wouldn’t be happening this way.

im just wondering if they are selling plans over the weekends ? i tried calling my liasion jamie - in sales but he hasn’t returned my call which is odd but i got the monday call so lets see how it goes - id like some good seats lol

Posted by rustyjr  from  staten island  on  12/05  at  08:40 PM

Meg;
I also owned a Sunday plan, beginng 1/3 into the 2008 season. I purchased 4 seats this morning. I left them hold on to my playoff money, maybe that had something to do with it as you suspect.

Posted by Roberto  on  12/06  at  01:43 AM

I purchased a pack of tickets from a STH. It fits my work schedule as I want to see some games at the new ballpark. But I truly believe the economy will get murch worse in 2009 and sports teams, especially the Mets, may be in for a rude awakening. This AM, an analyst predicted unemployment to hit 10% nationally; much higher in NYC. If that happens, all bets are off. My HDTV delivers all I need, and I don’t pay $13 bucks for a hot dog and a beer. I was a Sunday plan holder for many seasins before I finally gave them up,btw.

yeah im still amazed that we wont be automaticly entitled to post season tixx metsgrll u gotta let us know some of the tricks to get around that lottery system

Posted by rustyjr  from  staten island  on  12/06  at  12:34 PM

Meg, As I understand it, the opportunity to buy partial plans are being rolled out by what plan you had, not whether you let them keep your playoff money.  Season ticket holders first, then weekday plan holders, then Sat. plan holders, then Sun. plan holders.  Within those parameters, the loge seat holders pick before mezzanine, who pick before upper reserved.  There might be some adjustment for how close you are to home plate as well.  That said, I’m not sure how Roberto with a Sunday plan picked on Friday, because my friend with a Saturday mezzanine plan picks on Monday.  I had a Sunday mezzanine plan, and I pick 12/10 at 10 am. And they are holding all of my playoff money.  Were you in upper reserved?

Rumor has it that new tickets will be released with each roll-out, so we will not be just picking over the left-overs.  I hope that is true.

Posted by Val  from  queens  on  12/06  at  01:25 PM

yeah val i have a sat mez plan and i pick on monday

Posted by rustyjr  from  staten island  on  12/06  at  02:22 PM

SOme people have thought that the length of your continuous commitment with the Mets - e.g., did you always renew your plan from year to year, or did you let it drop and then buy something else a few games in? - also factors into seniority.

I do not believe that asking for a refund of playoff money could impact this. Frankly, I believe that would be illegal.

but, again, who knows. obviously it’s not scientific or they could have just told us where our seats were and not made it a land grab.

Posted by caryn  on  12/06  at  09:20 PM

I don’t believe seniority played into it per se.  I read somewhere that you also pick earlier depending on how close to home plate your tickets were.  The assumption behind that being that being the longer you hold your tickets the more likely your seats would improve.  But I have not heard about many people picking at odd times, which that would require.  Usually there is a 10 am start,

I’ve had luck with the lottery system for post season tickets in the past.  I would not count on it at all going forward.  With 10,000+ fewer seats and all the brokers that bought season tickets, I can’t imagine the lottery will yield much anymore.

I was a Sat plan holder from 05- this year, and a Sunday plan holder from 96-00. I decided to upgrade to a full season in sec 520 row 9. Im looking for some fans who would like to share the package with me.

If interested please drop me a note at

Posted by rustyjr  from  s.i  on  12/08  at  12:30 PM

Woo hoo. We stayed upstairs behind the plate. Uecker seats, to be sure. The advantage is that we’ll be under the upper-deck (sorry, Promenade) overhang. We are literally in the last row :-) At least no one will be kicking our seats or spilling beer on us. I need to look at the bright side…

Posted by Ken  from  Poughquag, NY  on  12/08  at  01:07 PM

“got it done level 400 section 436 row 2 - so im on the left feild line come up and say hi if u r there on a sat “

Hope that wasn’t a typo… 436 is out in Left-Center.

Got a Friday plan in Prom box 431. Even if playoff tickets aren’t guaranteed I am glad they gave us this option. I will probably have to sell a few games I can’t attend but all in all I’m glad I have them.

Posted by chris  from  ny  on  12/08  at  02:28 PM

nope thats what i was assigned promenade box level 400 sect 436 row 2 the pc i was on didnt have vista but looking at the map i thought i was right o the lf line - gotta check when i get home

Posted by rustyjr  from  s.i  on  12/08  at  04:22 PM

I did have a Sunday plan--upper reserved, for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. I also bought additional games.

Even if the Mets org is putting the refunded deposits last (which even I am skeptical about), the Mets fans aren’t organized enough to realize it. So, if they are doing that and it is illegal (also pretty likely), maybe no one would notice?

It’s all speculation. But I will let everyone know on Friday which seats we’re getting. We’re going to try for prom infield with a Saturday package.

Posted by Meg  from  NYC  on  12/08  at  05:11 PM

The thing to keep in mind, and we absolutely know this for sure - the Mets did NOT put the entire group of seats available on sale on day one. Rather they are putting on sale some from each group each day that people are eligible to buy. So someone buying on Friday could end up sitting with us.

I wouldn’t dawdle, however, in buying my seats on my assigned day.

Posted by caryn  from  Brooklyn  on  12/08  at  06:50 PM

Husband picked our seats yesterday. Can’t remember the section, but they are infield, upper deck (equivalent) row 14, weekday 15-game plan. Now - the Mets owe us several hundred dollars back.  They told hubby they didn’t know when it would be refunded. I’m not really happy about that… What was everyone else told?

Posted by CJ  from  Briarwood  on  12/09  at  11:37 AM

They actually end up owing us $6. So we didn’t have to deal with it (we transferred TBF’s playoff money from his account into mine since mine had better seniority).

You can send them a letter demanding your refund. Don’t just accept what the first person tells you. call back and if they say they don’t know, ask, “Well, can you please transfer me to someone who does?”

And if that doesn’t get traction, call your cc company and get a chargeback.

Posted by caryn  on  12/09  at  12:24 PM

Bought my Saturday plan tix yesterday.  Very high row, but fairly close to home… so that’s good.  As a Mezz partial plan holder at Shea, I’m glad to have the chance to even get into Citi-field.

But I’m disappointed, though, that there weren’t more prom box seats available for the Sat plan yesterday.  Even though I went online at exactly 10am.  (I know of several people who snagged prom box infield last week, but no such luck yesterday at all.) And the few prom box outfield seats that were available sold out early.

The Mets may open up a new selection of seats with each round, but the variety (and “quality”?) seems to me to dwindle with each allotment.  Just a word of warning to people who haven’t been able to purchase yet.

Posted by mimi  from  NYC  on  12/09  at  12:30 PM

If I recall correctly, the Mets were not making any Promenade Box seats in the infield (those would be club seats) available unless you wanted a 40-game plan.  The only promenade reserved seats being offered for 15-game plans are in the last 4-5 rows of each infield section.  Only promenade boxes in the outfield were being offered for the 15-game plans.  There was plenty of seating being offered in Promenade Outfield Reserved—that is where the bulk (probably 80%) of all the seats for the 15-game plans are located.

Posted by Doug  on  12/09  at  12:37 PM

The lack of Saturday tickets could also be blamed on the fact that the Sunday package is downright awful. Who would rather see the Nationals over Philly or the Rays?

Posted by Meg  from  NYC  on  12/09  at  04:30 PM

Today was my day. I forgot about it until now )(2:30PM). I was thinking about 15 game Sunday Promenade Box if I could get closer into the promenade infield. THe choice was section 437 row 7. 437 is the last section on the 3rd base side. Fugggedabout it.

I may try again, but if I don’t get good seats within the section I’m in I’ve just got no reason to do this.

I really didn’t think I was going to opt out, but at this point I see it as a possibility.

Posted by Eric  from  Ridgefield, CT  on  12/10  at  04:39 PM

I don’t know if anyone is even paying attention to this post anymore (or the comments) but we got section 531 row 3 seats today, Saturday package. There were no prom infield seats when we searched.

Posted by Meg  from  NYC  on  12/12  at  12:25 PM

hey meg sat plan sect 436 row 2 stop by and say hi

Posted by rustyjr  from  s.i  on  12/12  at  12:55 PM

It will be interesting to see which seats (if any) are made available to wholly new customers after the 17th.
