A LETTER FROM MINNESOTA.
My friend Kari, the Twins fan who came with me to last Saturday’s game, just got home, and sent me this:
We went to the Yankees game and the WHOLE time I was there, I was writing my own personal blog in my head. I just don’t get it. When I was in elementary school, there was a girl named Julie. She was smart, attractive, and a good athlete. But she was mean. She was mean in a very special way. She could purposely hurt the feelings of every single person in the classroom at one point or another, but yet SHE was the one everyone wanted to be friends with. Even if it meant that she just wasn’t a very good friend back. She could have cared less how many friends she had. She would plan parties at her house and only invite the other popular kids. Julie was the Yankees.
We got to Yankee Stadium at 4:30 so Paul could see Monument Park. Gates open at 5 o’clock and by 5:05, as we raced through the stadium there was a nice gentleman yelling “Monument Park has closed, please come back tomorrow. Sorry for any inconvenience.” Paul was slightly disappointed - I didn’t really care and then decided to stop off at the gift shop. While at the gift shop there were two families in there - both of them had traveled across the country - both of them had read everything they needed to know about “how to get into monument park”...one family had been there since 9 a.m. and the other since 2 p.m. and both were turned away as others that walked up after them just somehow got through the magic red velvet rope. My gut always said the Yankees suck - but I thought I could be wrong. It could just be jealousy. Maybe the Yankees don’t really suck and it’s just that I am a Twins fan and financially - we’ve just never been able to compete with “the rich kids”. But I’m not wrong. I thought was going to throw up when Alex Rodriguez walked up to the batter’s box and the whole stadium twinkled with camera flashes. For a second I glanced around - looking for Jesus - because seriously, who else deserves that sort of attention. Oh wait, it’s Alex Rodriguez. An overpaid celebrity that once was a pretty decent baseball player. Anyway. I was blogging. All inside my head - as I quietly sat and smuggly smiled at the fact that the Yankees were losing - disgracefully. Just the same way I was hoping the Mets would win; I was hoping the Yankees would lose.
I think they call it spite. :)
Thanks for a great tour of the greatest stadium in New York. Every single thing about it and it’s occupants is more real than anything they have in the rest of the state.
Sorry things are quiet around here - we are getting ready for our trip to Texas on Friday, and I am getting home from work so late all I can do is watch the game on fast-forward. Excited for the Pedro start in Houston!
