FEVER DOG.

The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated. I worked late Wednesday, and by the time I got to Thursday afternoon, I knew I should be home in bed… which is where I was by 9pm that night. I haven’t much moved from there since then. I’ve seen and heard bits and pieces of games, but not anything all the way through: I start, but then don’t finish, or I decide not to watch at all and go to sleep, only to wake up an hour or two later and can’t get back to sleep and stumble out to camp out on the couch with TBF. This, hopefully, explains the extended absence here.

It’s a beautiful weekend and I hate missing any of it, but I am spending this Sunday afternoon alternately camped on the couch to watch the game and sleeping. I am already calling off my attendance at Monday night’s game; it was a $5 ticket, not a pitching matchup I’m dying to see, and it’s not a game that matters. The rest of the week, of course, is another story entirely.

So I continue to take vitamins, guzzle fluids, and sleep as much as possible, and let TBF and WFAN bring me news of baseball: the Cubs, the Rays (a nice photo of Uncle Cliff), some old Stadium in the Bronx closing this weekend. I have friends in town from the West Coast but I’m confining myself to dinner because I need to conserve my energy; It’s going to be a long and interesting week, and likely no way for me to get a day off from Tuesday onward. Baseball friends from elsewhere, whose teams are not having meaningful September baseball are already emailing and texting and calling to wish our team luck. I am tired and excited and anxious and pulling out polar fleece and scarves and hats and blankets, wondering if I can get a thermos of coffee into the ballpark, and otherwise getting ready like I’m going on an expedition to the North Pole. It is a big week and the last week and in my feverish, anxious state I am feeling more emotion about Shea closing than I ever expected. It will be tough to say goodbye, especially when we have no plan in place for next year.

Who else is out at Shea all week?

I’ve had tickets for this Sat & Sun since early this season.  I’ve been excited all season and have felt very lucky to be going.  But, I have to admit, I never considered the Mets wouldn’t be in the play-offs.  Wow! This puts a totally different perspective on this weekend.  What will it be like on Sunday if that really is the last game to be played at Shea?  Help me prepare for that, just in case.
Hope you’re feeling better soon. Today was my first day back to work after being out 3 weeks with a horrible case of bronchitis that wouldn’t quit.  My friends said I actually had Metsitis and I wouldn’t be cured until they made the play-offs.

My father last night helpfully suggested the same thing. I’m better but still not 100%. I hate getting sick in the fall, it seems to take forever to go away.
