IT’S THE HAPPIEST DAY OF THE YEAR.

Longtime readers of MetsGrrl.com will undoubtedly be sad to learn that this year, there will be no suspense-filled tale of myself and TBF foraging through the wilds of Brooklyn or Queens in search of the shipping provider depot. This year, MLB went over to UPS (since DHL no longer does domestic shipping, praise all deities) and UPS will happily redirect your packages to your office.  I carried the contents of the package home, and set everything on the coffee table for the annual unveiling.

The package was definitely a letdown this year. You had your traditional Media Guide and, of course, the book of tickets:

[more, of course, after the jump]

(The opening day tickets are appropriately festive, I am happy to report.)

And then, the traditional unveiling of the commemorative item.

The resulting object:

OUR CONVERSATION, IMMEDIATELY AFTER ASSEMBLY:

*both of us peering, confused*
TBF: “What is it?”
Me: “That’s it.”
TBF: “That can’t be right.”
Me: “No, I do believe that is exactly what that - thing is supposed to do.”
*TBF opens the case, takes out the cardboard construct, and proceeds to attempt to pry it apart*
Me: “HEY!”
TBF: “It’s got to do something - doesn’t it?”
Me: “That one’s yours now.”
TBF: “But I didn’t hurt it.”
Me: “Your fingerprints are all over it.”
TBF: “Fine, I’ll take it to the office.”

In my tenure as a plan holder, I have received the following commemorative items:

2006: Leather home-plate shaped mousepad with embossed Mets logo
2007: The infamous “Shovel Pen”
2008: Wooden keepsake box

And now, 2009: The “3-d” cardboard Citi Field. The weird thing about it is that it has this elaborate case, and it would seem to make more sense for the model to have a slot to fit into, or to have the base and cover snug around the model. That thing is going to fall over and go crooked every time someone walks over and bumps into my desk…which is where it certainly has to go, because I don’t know what we’re going to do with it here. Your suggestions welcomed below.

now if there had been a 3D cardboard of Shea last year, that would be cool.  At least they didn’t just send you the 3D popup book of Citi Field that i’ve seen in bookstores.

Posted by DyHrdMET  on  04/01  at  09:12 AM

I’ve seen that popup book. Honestly, I would have rather had that.

LOL I got my tixx yesterday - went to the ups depot
On s.I ... Maybe I’m in the minority but I kinds like the worlds gaudiest paper weight ... It’s better than the palmers coco butter give away last year

Posted by Rustyjr  from  Staten island  on  04/01  at  10:11 AM

I did not get my media guide—any suggestions?

Posted by Sean Fitch  from  New York City  on  04/01  at  11:02 AM

the palmer’s cocoa butter wasn’t the plan holder giveaway. that was actually supposed to be a giveaway for female fans. the planholder gift last year was the wooden box.

i don’t know, sean, but if i order something and don’t get everything i order, i generally call the people i ordered it from. perhaps that’s a good place to start?

Posted by Caryn  from  Brooklyn, NY  on  04/01  at  11:06 AM

The wooden box last year was sooo much better. I was hoping for a similar box for the first season at Citifield.

Posted by Cody  from  Staten Island  on  04/01  at  11:26 AM

i’m just trying to think of something creative to do with it. i might try to get a shadowbox or other kind of frame. it’s not like i’m going to take it out, handle it, and admire it.

i would like to hear some more creative uses, please. you’re letting me down, people! :)

Posted by Caryn  from  Brooklyn, NY  on  04/01  at  11:35 AM

You are bashing this as an April fools joke right?  Secretly they actually sent something nice huh?

Posted by Andre M. T  from  Mineola  on  04/01  at  12:14 PM

I know it wasn’t a plan holder gift caryn I was in sucrssfully trying to be funny - I too loved the box - didn’t mind the shovel pen either

Posted by Rustyjr  from  Staten island  on  04/01  at  12:20 PM

No. This is the actual planholder gift. I wrote the post yesterday!!

Posted by Caryn  from  Brooklyn, NY  on  04/01  at  12:31 PM

Hey Caryn,
What plan do you have this year? We haven’t gotten the tix yet—and unfortunately, UPS is going to deliver them to the apartment we just moved out of (BOO)....so I’m not sure how to even get a tracking number from the Mets.

We have multiple plans, they aren’t sending them out in any kind of order. They emailed me a tracking number for one plan but not the other.

If you enter your Mets account number and your zip code into the UPS tracking system, you might be able to see the info - it’s showing for some people.

If you don’t know your tracking number or want to find out where your tickets are:

718-507-TIXX

is your friend.

I got the same “gift” with my 15 game Opening Day/Weeday pack.  I have no idea what to do with it.  It’s still in the box.

Posted by Mike  from  North Bablyon  on  04/01  at  12:58 PM

They emailed me to let me know that my address was wrong and my package bounced. My gf called customer service and was treated dismissively…until the person on the other end suddenly put her on hold. A few minutes later she was informed that they’d be sending our package out again with no explanation.

Posted by gerrard  from  BKNY  on  04/01  at  01:54 PM

i had the same exact thought about how they should have cut a slot in the stand for the thing to sit in. even my 4-yr old is like “how do you get it to not move around?”...

i’m thinking i may remedy the problem with some stick-on velcro.

ps - meg, i got an email from the mets a couple of days before i received my tix, letting me know they were on their way, and it had a tracking # in it.

Posted by kristen  from  brooklyn  on  04/01  at  03:02 PM

We got the same gift with our full season tickets…

Posted by Johh  from  NY  on  04/01  at  03:30 PM

Have been told by my Mets sales guy that the Media Guides were delayed this year and to stay tuned for another shipment.

Posted by John  from  NY  on  04/01  at  03:35 PM

I was told today that my 15 game pack was delivered.  i am very happy that UPS delivered them b/c u can change the delivery address.  Also i like the gift its something cool that i can put on a shelf…i like it better then the box last year.

Posted by Nick  from  Philly  on  04/01  at  04:08 PM

my ‘model’ is sitting on a shelf right now. what did you do with the box? carry it around under your arm?

Posted by Caryn  from  Brooklyn, NY  on  04/01  at  04:13 PM

I must admit that I was impressed with the amount of packaging material used to contain the free gift. It rruly was a slow (but not particularly seductive) unveiling. I think it looks much better in your photo - it almost looks 3D. In person, it just looks…  weird. Ruth suggested I put it back in the box, so I had to re-wrap it properly for storage. Maybe it will be worth hundreds of dollars in a few decades :-)

Posted by Ken  from  Poughquag, NY  on  04/01  at  08:01 PM

im sorry caryn it was afeeble attempt at humor on my part - will u be at sats game?

Posted by rustyjr  from  staten island  on  04/01  at  08:08 PM

Posted about this a few times. It’s chick blogger day at the ballpark. Going with an entourage that includes Mets, Red Sox and Phillies fans.

Posted by Caryn  from  Brooklyn, NY  on  04/01  at  08:17 PM

I was a lowly 7-pack ticketholder in the past, and now with my 15-gamer, I had no idea there were such goodies on the way to me!  Agree the photo looks better than the ‘model’ in person, but still cool.  Can’t wait til I get my first look at the real thing on Saturday!

Posted by Eileen  from  Manhattan  on  04/01  at  08:21 PM

It would seem that some years the season / plan holder gift is awesome, and other years it’s, “What were they thinking?”

I can’t remember everything I’ve gotten since I’ve been a plan holder, but the BEST item I’ve gotten from them was the Shea Home Run Apple Clock.  The worst had to be that pen (that never even worked!)  This year’s gift is sitting on a file cabinet in my cube.  It’s middle-of-the-road, in my opinion.

Cheers!

I was wondering if any of you with a media guide could tell me where the mets are staying when they play the dodgers next month in la? also, im coming out to ny and hope to catch a mets game while im there, any idea when tickets for june go on sale?

Posted by Dana  from  LA  on  04/12  at  03:58 PM

Dana, I would rather not get in trouble from the Mets by posting it on the internet here. Yes, i know it’s in the media guide. I do not want to get the reputation for being someone who distributes that info.

They haven’t yet said when they are putting the rest of the tickets on sale. They are trying hard I think to maximize full season sales.
