So simple, yet so profound, yet seemingly so
impossible right now.

what is going on?  the nationals are a good… 39 games back and mets struggle to score one run?

I must truly love this team because they continue to have the ability to break my heart over and over and over again

i don’t know what the distraction is. they know that the nationals show up to play them harder than any other team. maybe it’s the manny acta factor, maybe it’s the lastings milledge factor, maybe it’s the church/schneider factor, maybe it’s the lo duca factor - i don’t know, but i DO know that the mets have faced the nationals enough times that they should KNOW that they suddenly act like a team playing for a pennant every time they roll into town.

i passed out monday night about half an hour into the game, and when i woke up around 9 or 9:30 TBF said “game? what game? was there a game tonight?” and given that i’d heard him screaming earlier… i knew.

and last night… still in disbelief.

i alternate between talking with TBF about days we may need to take off for the playoffs and composing in my head my call the call i will make to the mets ticket office to get my postseason deposit back the day after the team blows it.

The factor occurred early in 2007. I was at the game. It was the second game of the year between the Gnats and Mets, a Saturday afternoon in April. Instead of Mauel, Willie was obviously told to exchange line-up cards with Met’s “fave” Manny Acta before the game. Willie looked to the Shea crowd as though they should be utterly thrilled to have their mediocre ex-third base coach managing Omar’s ex-organization. The Gnats won that day, and my friend said to as we were exiting, “Something is wrong.” Yes, indeed, something is wrong. Durocher never said, “Nice guys finish last,” but it’s true. The upside: There will be plenty of seats available in 2009 at New Dodgers Stadium in 2009 after Collapse V2.0. Le nausea.

You know what? Even if there is another collapse, the f’ing Mets ticket office will STILL refuse to sell us a freaking partial plan and will STILL try to upsell us on a full season with the “get in line now!” bs.

At which point I will call for Mr. Ianncello’s head on a plate.

Someone at work said “Just like last year” and I said no, last year they just didn’t bother to show up. This year, they’re just not good enough. TBF is holding up the wild card.

me: “YAY! WE’RE #2!”

After three straight collapses (StL 2006---and that stupid Endy bobblehead!; 2007; and the upcoming 2008 collapse) I think a lot of folks are going to jump off the bandwagon that started with the aquisition of Martinez the Hurt in 2005. I couldn’t care less about the Wild Card, as I feel the only way to redeem 2007 for players like Reyes and Wright was to win the NL East in 2008 (couldn’t care less about the mercenaries). So I think by 2010 there will be plans; 2009 will be scalper city, as people were offered pseudo-season tickets and jumped the que over longtime plan holders like you, The Boy Friend, and moi. By 2011, New Dodgers Stadium will be empty and they’ll be giving tickets away. Every true Mets fan must feel like Karl Earhardt now---fucked over and dead. The Mets organization has fucked over many over the years…
