OYE COMO VA. [06-19-07]

P6190094

I had written something sarcastic, I had written something witty and self-deprecating, and I just threw it all away.

I have made countless excuses for this team. People complaining that they’re not showing any emotion, I talk about “game face” and wonder if there isn’t some kind of cultural difference about showing weakness or not showing weakness and how you behave, and just because Delgado isn’t throwing his notebook across the dugout and Beltran isn’t sitting on the bench with his head in his hands the way Wright or Lo Duca might be - well, maybe we can’t evaluate the Latino players on Western standards. And defending Willie, Willie needs to be a rock, we don’t need him to be Bobby Cox or Lou Piniella, that’s not Willie and who wants him to be that?  I am tired of meaningless soundbytes and quotes that sound like they went through some baseball buzzword generator - although that’s really not my problem right now.

My problem isn’t a lack of emotion (based on what we can see on tv, which is someone else’s perception). At this point, their accountability isn’t to the media or to ESPN or whoever. At this point, their accountability is to the fans. I want to hear someone apologize to the fans, I want to hear someone say, “We know the fans are frustrated and we are sorry we are letting them down and we appreciate their support.” I don’t want to sit through a putrid game like the one I did tonight and have the announcer cheerily urging us to vote All-Star.

Stop insulting the fans with spin and let’s get some honest contrition out there for a change.

I like the Twins very much and was eager to see Santana in action. After the Mets, they’re the team I know the most about, thanks to Bat Girl’s tutelage. I took some great photos tonight (of the Twins), so if you’re at all interested in checking them out, you can click here.

Just like a bad relationship....
they break your heart, the play with your emotions, the cause horrible gut feelings… and we go back no questions asked.

Seems to me is time for some answers *sighs*

my brother flew in from minneapolis for this game.  at least he left the stadium happy.  we’re going again tonight for the rubber game which i’m assuming the mets have already conceded since they haven’t won a series all month.  could we suck more?

I think tonight’s match-up may have a different feel with your Perez on the mound and our Baker. The Twins have a problem with run support right now and Baker is the kind of pitcher that needs some numbers on the board to feel comfortable.

Posted by Lipgloss & Baseball  from  Minneapolis  on  06/20  at  02:34 PM

what, baker needs more than 9 runs?

Posted by krup  from  nyc  on  06/20  at  02:37 PM

heh. TBF is there tonight because this was the free game they gave the survivors of that rain delay. What’s going to suck is that i’m not going and this generally means the game will be excellent.

on the other hand, who knows? last night I was sending text messages to my grrls reading “THE METS HAVE BEEN CAPTURED BY ALIENS”.

Posted by metsgrrl  on  06/20  at  03:18 PM

And welcome to the Minnesota contingent!

Posted by metsgrrl  on  06/20  at  03:20 PM

and here i thought they were captured by members of the Texas Rangers

Aww man, MG.  If I had known that, I would have given you dibs on the tickets.  I’m going with an FUer...but we have another game next month and I would have loved to chill in the Coop box with the MG!!

Posted by Coop  from  Jersey  on  06/20  at  03:32 PM

Hey MG, great site you have here.  I’m glad you stopped by and directed me to it; I’ll definitely be checking in throughout the season.

With regards to last night’s game, don’t be too frustrated with your team’s offense.  Sometimes Johan does things like that.  You guys have a much easier match-up tonight… The Twins’ starter, Scott Baker, has been shelled in his past several outings and there have been rumblings that he may be down to his last start.

Posted by Nick N.  from  Minneapolis  on  06/20  at  03:37 PM

Thanks, Nick. However, clearly you haven’t been watching the same Mets we have for the last month.

I mean, just how many times could we hit into shortstop last night?

Posted by metsgrrl  on  06/20  at  03:58 PM

sorry, didn’t mean to be grumpy on that last comment. or at least not grumpy at Nick :)

Coop, as long as I got to see Santana pitch I was good. More than two games in a week and I start to melt down a little. :)

Yknow, I almost headed my piece on last night’s debacle with a Santana reference, but I’m glad you picked something more old-school than the Supernatural references going through my head.

Then again, you could probably just run the lyrics of “Evil Ways” verbatim and they’d about cover the situation.

My Game Day is shaping up. Looks like I’m tending to business Hudson Valleyish on Friday, staying somewhere up there that night, then coming into the city Saturday before heading out for the game. There may be a bar or two involved in that- likely someplace east 30s.

Ray, you made my day by getting the Santana reference!!!

I actually had it planned in advance (which is rare) and when, in my glee, I shared it with TBF last night, and argued it was the best-known Santana song, he made some comment about Rob Thomas.
I meant Santana the BAND, not just Devadip Carlos (another Carlos)!

we are going to the Mermaid Parade in Coney Island on Saturday since it’s likely the last one before they tear it all down.

Considering there wasn’t anything worthy to show D on the field, of course the best part had to be the authentic fan who came to say hi and yell at the pitcher! :)
