PROMOTIONAL NIGHT FAIL.

In honor of the upcoming series in San Francisco, I thought you might enjoy seeing what the San Francisco Giants have been featuring as giveaways as part of their various Ethnic Heritage Nights.

Be prepared to throw your commemorative Pepsi keychain across the room.

EXHIBIT #1:
For Chinese Heritage Night:

THE LOU SEAL DRAGON BOBBLEHEAD!! I have to have one of these (going prices on eBay currently $45. I’ll wait) Tell me this is not the most awesome thing ever. IF YOU CAN HOOK ME UP I WILL MAKE IT WORTH YOUR WHILE!!!

With the purchase of this special ticket package at only $20.00, you will not only get to sit in the Chinese Heritage Night section but will receive a unique gift to commemorate your trip to the park - a Lou Seal themed Lion Dancing bobblehead!

EXHIBIT #2:
For Japanese Heritage Night:

“Come join us for our special pre-game Sake Tasting event and pre-game party, beginning at 5:00 in Lot D! We’ll have live music, DJ’s and thousands of Japanese Americans gathering, or simply Giants fans who enjoy the taste of rice wine! When you buy the $20.00 ticket package you will receive a limited edition Giants themed Sake Set, a Sake Tasting Punch-Card which allows you five free tastings AND a seat in the Japanese Heritage Night section.

EXHIBIT #3:
For Korean Heritage Night:

When you purchase your ticket for a special price of $20.00, you will get to experience the pre-game AND in-game cultural entertainment, special seating in the Korean Heritage Night section as well as a Giants/Korean headband and thundersticks.

EXHIBIT #4:
This one goes out to my people - for Jewish Heritage Day:

(It says “San Francisco Giants” in transliterated Hebrew, in case you couldn’t guess.)

Always a great time at AT&T Park, the Jewish Heritage Night package comes equipped with a seat in the Jewish Heritage Night section as well as a Giants Jewish Heritage Night t-shirt.

All of the events are listed on the Giants’ web site. Indian Heritage Night, Mexican Heritage Night - super cool tshirts and admission and this is a million times more awesome than some ethnic dancers on the infield grass during the pre-game ceremonies (when no one is there to see them dance except their immediate family).  I am thrilled to see that my favorite anti-mascot, the Crazy Crab, has his own night.

The Mets just seem even more lame and even less fan-friendly than they already are, a feat that did not seem possible. Especially given that it took them this far into the season to announce that they will actually be doing something to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1969 Mets. Which will probably be a pre-game ceremony (if we’re lucky) with a couple of key players, the noted glaring absence of others, and a plastic keychain with a big corporate sponsor on it.

I know. I live in New York City and the Mets don’t even have a seasonal ad campaign this year, thinking (probably rightly) that they don’t need anything beyond the very existence of Citi Field to get people to the games.

FAIL.

Meanwhile, the two Giants game I’ll be going to this weekend have no promotion :-(

I’ll keep an eye out for any of these good souveniers though.

those giveaways look really cool.  the t-shirt for Jewish Heritage day even has some Hebrew writing on the front around the team’s logo.  I remember when the Mets did that and I went (specifically for that) 10 years ago.  Good cheap field level seats too for that game.

Don’t get down on the ‘69 celebration until they blow it.  They did a good job with the ‘86 one a few years ago.  But it’s a different time in Mets ownership.

And it’s somewhat ironic that the very existence of Citi Field is there to get me to games (get comfortable with the view behind the obstructions, etc.), yet its very existence (at least in the un-decorated form) really pisses me off.  You want to see “fail” along these lines, look at some of the posts on my blog from the past few days.  I actually used the word “treason”.

The thing that I hate about promo nights that 90% of them are for kids 12 and under. I understand supporting younger fans, but we shouldn’t have to bribe a 10 year to get a bobblehead.

The Hebrew writing says “San Francisco Giants” literally. They used the Hebrew letters to spell out the English sounds.

I’m only down on the 69 celebration because it wasn’t on the original promotional schedule. They needed to think about that?

Jules, I am honored you are using your plane time to read MetsGrrl! I can’t wait for your report!!

Justin, did you notice that this year the schedules say “first 25,000 fans” and not “first 25k children”? remains to be seen if they stick to that, though.

Oh yes, surfing the net, have Tweetdeck open, reading a Lost recap. Can’t complain.

And I remember getting a Lets go Mets shirt in Hewbrew a few years back. Would love to have another.

D’oh, just saw that it’s Korean Heritage night tonight and Japanese Heritage night tomorrow in SF, both of the games we have tix for! But a special ticket is needed for these, sigh.

BRIBERY

I’m not super impressed by the Korean Heritage Night promotional items, but the other stuff is so much better than anything the Mets have done in recent years.

Dear Mets,

Please don’t screw up the 1969 anniversary celebration any more than you already have by making it seem like an afterthought.

I’ve seen people with Mets hats with “Mets” spelled out in Hebrew letters.  I love being able to read that stuff.

I still have my 2001 Italian Heritage Night poster featuring illustrations of Mike Piazza, John Franco and Bobby Valentine alongside a DiGiorno logo.

It’s not attractive. It’s DiGiorno.

Hi, I enjoy reading your blog.  I’m a Dodger fan living in Giant territory, but even I have to give props to the Giants handling of their giveaways, honoring of their history, and their ballpark. With my wife being a Giant fan, we watch a lot of games and I have always been impressed with their fan treatment. Another thing you might not know is they have started to open the ballpark for BP an hour earlier than usual.  For example tonight, they will open the gates at 4:15pm for a 7:15pm game.  (I think it only Fridays and Saturdays, but I’m not sure).  In addition to watching BP, you also get a discount on food during that time.

I bought a Mets t-shirt when I was in Israel that has “New York Mets” in Hebrew on it.

When I wore it when I was in Del Ray Beach, Florida visiting my grandparents I was stopped by tons of people who gave me a thumbs up or something similar. Hell, when I went to the Kosher Grocery, I met a guy who had the same thing but a different design.
