real girls don’t wear pink

At my first Mets game of 2005, I made noises on the 7 train about how I wanted a Mets hat. So, at the very first merchandise stand we encountered, TBF happily accomodated this request. No, it was not the classic blue hat with orange button that Mr. Purist wears, but it was black and white and had the NY logo and was very MG (before she was MG), and I loved it.

But my hat is not a woman’s hat. And as I became more interested in acquiring Mets merchandise, I was appalled to discover what MLB and the Mets considered to be appropriate (or desirable) wear for female baseball fans.

Case #1: the dreaded pink hat

It’s not just the Mets who are guilty in this regard. Every MLB team - and I do mean EVERY - has the anemic, wussy pink hat. Even the Red Sox have pink hats. No real female baseball fan I know wears a pink hat (again, apologies to Zoe, who does rock the pink hat, and I do mean rock).

The pink hat exists for one reason, and one reason only: So that the girls who get dragged to the game by their boyfriends have something to wear. The pink hat exists so that boyfriends or husbands (or heck, lesbian partners of girlie girls), who feel guilty that they have dragged their girlfriend to the game, can go to the team store and buy something to placate them: “Oh, it’s pink, it must be for a girl.”

Give me a break.

The pink is weak, the pink is boring, the pink is not reflective of most women who sit in the baseball park, and surely, MLB could get some real designers to make something more attractive for female baseball fans to wear. And it’s not just the hats: the same yucky pink is used on t-shirts, sweatshirts, you name it.

To quote Zoe, in an email exchange we had today: “I love pink, BUT AS AN ACCENT.”

Case #2: anything that implies that the only reason I am at the ballpark is because I want to bone David Wright

Have you seen this crap? No, really, have you seen it?

Any variation on “Mrs. Wright,” “Looking for Mr. Wright,” “Wright-aholic,” etc. The only thing resembling official bling on Mets merch is down this aisle, which, besides pandering, is also sized for a woman who clearly never eats any of the food at Shea Stadium (more on that below). In fact, the largest shirt would barely fit my 6-year-old niece (and her father is from Boston so she won’t be owning one anyway, not that I would set that kind of example for the young lady in any event).

[I could say something here about merchandise indicating my intent towards Mr. Floyd, but TBF reads the blog, and Zoe is likely to hunt me down and pummel me. Besides which, I still wouldn’t wear it for the insulting/pandering/etc. reasons mentioned above.]

Case #3: Real Women Are Not Cookie-cutters

If you are a woman and have ever tried on anything at Shea Stadium, you would be frustrated. It’s not entirely that the people designing this clothing gathered their opinion about what real women’s bodies are shaped like from Playboy and Budweiser ads, it’s that real women HAVE DIFFERENT SHAPES.

TBF and I just bought sweatshirts for the playoffs. Listen, I know : it’s a sweatshirt. For women, they had teeny tiny flimsy hooded ones that stopped at my bellybutton, or sturdy ones that will actually keep me warm in the upper deck next month - for men.

Guess which one I bought?

Zoe, on the other hand, had to buy a child’s size.

Listen, it’s not like I’m trying to walk into the Limited and trying to buy clothing that is inapropriate for a grown woman to wear. All women who are baseball fans should have choices.

Case #4: Other Teams Have Cool Stuff Designed For Women

I’d like a Mets jacket - I really, really would. But what they have is unattractive for a woman. So I bought a 1986 satin jacket on eBay and I go retro, which at least has some style and flair involved.

But I know other teams have items for women because I’ve seen female fans of these other teams wearing them, and I am envious, and jealous, and pissed off.

Forget that nonsense about “updating” “Meet The Mets” to make it more “inclusive” (a bigger crock of nonsense I have rarely enountered, and MG is a bra-burning feminist type) - be inclusive by giving me something I can buy and happily wear. Do you know how much money I would spend?

Wait, maybe it’s better that I don’t like anything in the store after all.

Zoe also has some words to say on this subject.

Oh girl, as soon as I have the time, I’m going to photoshop some clothes I WANT to see.

I cannot agree more with u....i go to shea n see these girls wearing short mini jean skirts n mrs.david wright shirts..n i think to myself i bet she cant even name the entire lineup and 10 players.. I myself do have a “I LOVE DAVID WRIGHT” shirt n his jersey..but that is only because he is my favorite, but i kno alot about the mets than some girls do...i watched almost every game this season n can name the entire roster n i am keepin up to date on recent trades, etc. Like you i can call myself a “true” mets fan n not a “fake” one like some girls are. GREAT BLOG!

Wow… just found your blog accidentally on google, and wanted to let you know I can’t agree more!!! Everytime I see someone in a pink hat I want to throw something (preferably a hot dog or beer, but what a waste) at them. My real pet peeve is the pink football jerseys.... they even make them with glitter accents. Sorry, but when did one of the Bengals colors become “guava?”

Mets Grrl- Love this post!!!!!! You know how I rebel against it? I buy the kids sizes for boys. The Mens sizes don’t go below a medium and I can’t wear that garbage- I wouldn’t be caught dead in those chicked out monstrosities they are selling now.

The pink hats stink on ice-it reminds of when I was growing up it would be something I would have to get to make my tomboyishness acceptable to my girly-girl mother who detested the fact that I like to play ball with the guys in the streets rather than play with dolls.

God, I hate pink hats more than anything in the world, though it’s more because the sorts of girls who wear them are usually sitting in front of me at the stadium, drinking beer and waving big styrofoam fingers in the air so I can’t watch the game, and incessantly taking pictures of each other on their cellphones rather than actually, you know, paying attention to some baseball.  Because, you know, they couldn’t take pictures of each other somewhere else.

The Mariners actually have a LOT of women’s clothes lines.  But almost all of them are WAY too girly for me.  I have one women’s Mariners baseball shirt, and it’s a plain navy one that just says “Seattle Mariners” on it.  I’ve got a Phillies one that’s just red with a white P on the front, and “Utley 26” on the back.  Nice, simple… not these ones with flowery logos in pink that say things like “I’m a major league talent scout… show me what you’ve got!”

(not making that up.  it’s a real shirt they sell here.)

Also, the only Mets shirt I currently have is a normal men’s sized Cameron #44 one :) I wear it in Seattle from time to time, a lot of people around here still love him as well.

Hi grrl,
ok your blogs comment notification always on the fritz for me (blogger sucks sometimes),combined with your moderation makes it tricky to post, so sorry if i try to post this more than once.

I take interest in this clothes discussion: you know, sometimes men looking for tasteful “gear” are also disadvantaged, even though we don’t (usually) have to figure out “where to put our breasts.”

Anyhow, you may want to check out my recent blog post, as I just found a decent option for mets clothing--scroll down to the “buying expensive clothing” part.

I agree w/the whole pink thing - nevermind the fact that there is NO pink ANYWHERE in the Mets colors!

As far as the “boning” Wright issue - it seems like the only people who wear those shirts are 12 or 13-year-olds who have no business wearing something like that anyway!  Don’t get me wrong, I am clearly enamored with the guy, but c’mon now!...I wonder what his thoughts are on those shirts?

Even though I really don’t agree w/how merch is presented to women [read: young, impressionable kids], I feel that since the money is going to a good cause [the best team in baseball!], I suppose we’ll just have to suck it up ;)

Great post. I love the color pink, but not for baseball-related gear. I wanted to throw up when I went to the New Era store in the Village and they had more women’s hats for the Phillies than the Mets (I’m planning a post somewhat about that experience soon, with some of the issues you mentioned mixed in as well). I’d complain more about the shape issues, but I have a hard enough time finding things that fit me properly in stores specifically dedicated to selling clothing, so finding things at the clubhouse shop that were designed for my body type is more than I could reasonably hope for. Not that it stopped me from buying a ridiculously expensive long-sleeved top with rhinestones on it, or a tank top I need to wear a bra with, or…

i’m totally with you on this one.  its terrible.  the pink hats are borderline insulting, and to get a decent shirt in hopes it looks even remotely flattering you have to go to the boys section, but then there presents the problem of where do i put my breasts.  they definitely do not make mets gear for real mets fans who happen to be of the female gender.  my favorite of your posts, by far!

I completely agree! My husband points out the pink “stuff” to me as well, but I go authentic all the way!!  That’s just what real women and true fans do…
