SANTANA ROUNDUP.
Lipgloss & Baseball:
Dear Everyone in my Office,
Swear. To. God. If one more of “youse peoples” come up to me and say “Hee hee, what about that Santana trade, eh?” I will head butt you in the chest. Don’t test me. To quote one of our irate clients “Go to hell and stay there you bitch!” Okay, that was a little extreme but I was just looking for a way to incorporate that quote in my blog today!
Misery Loves Company:
This is merely a placeholder for some serious bliss if, as reported, the Mets have acquired Johan Santana. To be a total Nervous Nelly, I will wait until the extension is signed, the physical is passed, and Johan is at the podium, donning the colors and breaking in that stiff, new cap. I am loath to count chickens, so I’ll just walk around with a sly grin and a whole lot of fingers crossed.
MetsBrotha:
This is truly a great day to be a Mets fan. Not only does Omar Minaya and the Mets land THE premier pitcher in all of baseball, they do so without giving up any starting players OR their top prospect, Fernando Martinez. For Omar to pull this trade off is remarkable when you think about where the Mets were 2 months ago… which was behind the Red Sox, Yankees and Angels in terms of best deals on the table. Omar, all is forgiven after that horrible Milledge trade!
For the Twins, you have to feel a bit sorry for their fanbase. Again, the economics of baseball deprive them of an opportunity to hold on to a future hall of famer… wait what am I saying, screw that WE JUST GOT THE BEST PITCHER IN BASEBALL FOR DIRT CHEAP!!! WOOHOOOOOOOOO!!! WOOHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
[more after the jump]
Lone Star Mets:
I haven’t been this excited about Mets baseball since October 18, 2006!
Anthony at Hot Foot:
The doubters, the folks who questioned his vision and his methods, the ones who had little patience for an off season they felt was a disappointment, considering the way the prior campaign had ended. Those folks are humbled by the events of today. Today, Omar Minaya deserves their praise. Omar Minaya deserves all of our praise.
Now, more than ever, in Omar we trust.
Twins Fanatnicks:
Let’s face it, the Twins have a track record of success when trading away star players amidst their primes, even if the results initially seem heavily skewed in favor of the other team. Maybe that will be the case with yesterday’s deal that likely sends Johan Santana to the Mets in return for four unspectacular prospects. Unfortunately, that seems rather unlikely.
Faith and Fear In Flushing:
And finally, there it is. For once, the talk-radio gasbags were right: If ever a club desperately needed a page turned, it was the current incarnation of the Mets. By collapsing on the final day of the season, there was no way to turn that page. With no next chapter, there was nothing to do but brood over what had happened. The collapse was destined to dominate February and March, to haunt April, and there was the very real danger of it shaping the narrative of late spring and summer. There was no escape.
But it turns out there was a way out. Omar found it, and he didn’t even pay the king’s ransom we would have forgiven as the price for the key. Here’s to Omar. Here’s to a clean getaway. Here’s to 2008. Here’s to Johan Santana.
Curlz and Curveballs:
Say it isn’t so.
I’m not ready to say goodbye to the best pitcher this franchise (and maybe the whole league) has ever seen.
I’m not ready to say goodbye to a player who was just incredibly fun to watch, who made your joy and even, pride in the sport grow each time he threw the ball.
I know it may be so…but until that contract is signed, I’m going to sulk a little, no a lot and even then I expect a certain extended period of pouting to be observed.
OM: Screw that. I try to shore up the bullpen and what do you do? You make jokes about arm casts and afterschool specials. You didn’t trust me. And now that I’ve gotten you your ace, you’re all happy and you’re all like “oh Omar, you’re the best” and “oh Omar you’re so awesome” and like “oh Omar, sell me a seven pack”. Yet you snicker behind my back and make fun of my smaller acquisitions while not seeing the big picture. Well, screw you. I’ve had it with you sitting in front of your laptop assuming that there’s going to be a disaster at every turn. I brought you Petey. I brought you Carlos Beltran. AND I GOT YOU JOHAN SANTANA YOU PETULANT BLOGGER B*TCH! (Omar flips Metstradamus the double bird and laughs like Cesar Romero).
The Coop:
But if you look back in Mets history, you will see a recurring theme. That the ties the bind us, the very things that make us Mets fans—the pain, the suffering, the knowing of both, then joy of winning and the agony of defeat—all get washed away eventually. There is something that will say—well if the bad times didn’t happen, I wouldn’t have gotten to the good times.
And finally, from Ben Shpiegel at the New York Times:
The Mets acquired Santana, a two-time Cy Young award winner, from the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday afternoon, beating out the Yankees and Boston Red Sox, who ultimately seemed more interested in keeping him from each other rather than actually paying the cost of acquiring him themselves.
