TWO ACES.
How much money would the Mets make if they sold photos of that? Of course they won’t - like that awesome back-to-back image of Wright and Reyes last year that I would have paid $$$ for. Why on earth would they actually try to monetize something people would actually like to buy, and would promote the team, when you can charge everyone $2 to get into Open Workouts? [UPDATE: The Mets have link, and now that $2 is a “donation” instead. How about you donate half of the parking concession if you want to raise money for charity?]
I have to admit that I was relieved when I read the caption for the photo above and confirmed that it was posed. Not that I don’t already know what a big ham Pedro is, but for a minute I was a little worried.
Yesterday was Spring Training Photo Day, when Your 2008 New York Mets had the duties of assuming 100% forced gaiety, and posing for photos like the one above, as well as this:
That’s got to be the most, um, HAPPY image of the Mets since that promo for the All-Star Game last year. Pedro is SO skinny!
(Do you think that if he keeps posing for photos with his arm around Johan, it will make every member of the press stop asking about the big competition between the two of them?)

Competition between Pedro and Johan (like it, I’m on a first name basis with them-lol)?
Actually Pedro does look good and maybe a little competition between them will help make the Mets even better!
I was actually being facetious. Pedro Martinez doesn’t need to compete with anybody, and the whole competition being formulated in the media for need of something to write about is just silly, isn’t it?
Pedro is just so happy that he doesn’t have all that pressure on him any more. Their going to make great team work. I see this as a Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling relationship but probably even better!
See, oddly, your story about going to get Johan jerseys totally reminded me of Pedro in so many ways. I had a friend who was just obsessed with Pedro during the 2005 season, to the point where I was saying things to him like, “Ah, your boyfriend is starting tonight, right?”
So when I visited NYC for a week that summer and went to a bunch of Mets games with that friend, and his birthday just happened to be during that week… well, of course I went to the Mets store and bought him a shiny Martinez #45 shirt. (And myself a Cameron #44, of course.) And we went to a game for his birthday in these matching Mets shirts looking like complete and utter dorks. (But happy dorks.)
Naturally, later that evening, in another part of town, still wearing the shirts, someone shouted something rude at us about Mets fans. I forget exactly what. They were wearing a Yankees hat, naturally.
My friend shouted back, “Yeah, but we have Pedro and you don’t!”
I hope that this year sometime, somewhere, you get to shout at some Yankees fan, “We have Johan and you don’t!” Or better yet, “We’ve got two aces. What’ve you got?”
deanna, that’s a great and quintessentially nyc baseball story.
we used to say that about endy. but i may make shirts that say, “we have johan and you don’t.” unfortunately, mets fans are so superstitious that they’d never buy and wear one.
Hey, Metsy—I just wanted to say that, as a Sox fan who’s totally committed to farm system products, I’m quite happy for you and all the other Mets fans who got Santana. I have a long-standing soft spot for The Better NY Team, because of the whole enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend thing and because my cousins are huge Mets fans as well. I still love Pedro (a lot). I got to go Port St. Lucie a couple weeks ago (and got some great pictures—I linked to one that’s quite fitting for this post in the “URL” space of the comment) and I was SO happy to see your two aces… one because he’s a familiar face and one because we didn’t have to give up Jacoby Ellsbury, Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie, or Justin Masterson!
Good luck, and I’ll see you in October! ;D
Liza - best photo EVER. thank you sooo much!
