TWO CONVERSATIONS.
Actual IM conversations to coworkers this morning.
#1: with Carlos the Mets fan in the uptown office:
[09:48] metsgrrl: and we say a fond farewell to the 2008 major league baseball season.
[09:49] carlos: fond? pssshhhhh
[09:50] carlos: I think in all my years as a Met fan, this is probably the worst as far as the thing I furthest wanted to see happened….another collapse followed by a World Series ring for Pat Burrell and Jimmy Rollins.
[09:55] metsgrrl: i don’t even want to think about it
[09:58] metsgrrl: i am so upset i could scream
[09:58] metsgrrl: i don’t even want to think about baseball next year
[09:58] metsgrrl: that and the wilpons hanging onto my playoff money because they are too lazy and greedy to announce what they are doing with partial ticket plans
[09:58] metsgrrl: i am ready to say ‘fuck that’ and take my money and just buy a handful of games
[10:00] carlos: and that is a shame that they can’t even get that right
[10:01] metsgrrl: they’re too busy knocking shea down
#2: My developer who lives/works in Philly:
[10:24] metsgrrl: were they shooting off guns in the street last night?
[10:24] phillydev: as soon as strike 3 hit, it was mayhem
[10:24] phillydev: more cops than new years
It’s just not a good day.

I just called the Mets Ticket Office. Their letter about plans was all bullshit. They have no idea what’s going on or when the so-called plan info is being sent out. Disgusting. Meanwhile, on mets.com, scalpers already have their season tickets up for sale at scalpers’ prices via StubHub, that old hustle ($18 tickets with $40 fees). The Mets are a disgusting organization. They DESPISE their fans. I hope you blog about it, as that paid propagandist, neo-Libertarian (“Hey! Let’s starve the people with more compassion”) Matt Cerrone wouldn’t touch this issue with a 6-foot stick.
Matt isn’t ever going to take a position on this as he isn’t a planholder (never has been) and it doesn’t impact him personally. Even before he was official it would never have impacted him personally. His userbase aren’t planholders either.
Obviously now he’s not going to write anything critical of the Mets but this is just never anything that would have been on his radar.
Everyone needs to start calling again.
I think, Caryn, that Matt isn’t going to defend Mets fans because he’s a PAID OPERATIVE of the NY Mets and SNY. When I was screaming on various blogs two years ago that a 39,000-seat stadium (the 45,000 capacity includes VIP areas, suites, clubs, bars, and standing room, which have nothing to do with the baseball experience) in NYC was a disaster for the average Mets fan, metsblog did not take up the cause. However, metsblog is concerned with hundreds of issues and posts frquently 24/7/365. He didn’t take a stand because it’s not in his interest to take a stand. If you do call the Mets Ticket Office, please let us know what they say. Thanks.
I don’t want to delete your comment but would prefer that we not bash MetsBlog. One, doing so attracts the type of defenders who normally hang out on 4chan. Two, Matt says he doesn’t have an opinion and i honestly believe he doesn’t have one on this subject. At this point, his experience of coming to games isn’t the average joe or josephine. Even before he became official (and good for him since that was clearly what he wanted), he lives in Connecticut and wasn’t at Shea as often as he might have liked.
I wish he would cover this but none of the beat writers are covering it. Because it doesn’t impact them.
Then let me give kudos to one person, Richard Neer of WFAN, who bemoans and openly encourages feedback on the Mets, Yanks, Giants, and Jets fans woes as these sports teams chose to cater to the rich and ignores their original fan bases. (H/t, too, to Steve Somers, who thinks the capacity at CitiField is too low, and pointed out that even in St.L., going with only 45,000 seats was big mistake admitted to by the Cards’ brass). As I’ve said before, I can buy season tickets today if I so choose. I’m lucky due to unforeseen circumstances, but I still remember who I was a year ago when I had to borrow money to cover my Saturday and Sunday plans.
As for Matt, he does a great job on his blog, but he does have a team of bloggers, some of whom may very well be affected by ticket prices.
