WEEKEND WARNING: UNSEALED BOTTLES NO LONGER ALLOWED.

The Mets are no longer allowing UNSEALED bottles of beverages to be taken into Citi Field. This information is not on the Mets’ web site, nor is it posted anywhere; however, they are enforcing this fairly consistently. We had a run-in with security over this on Wednesday, who accused us of taking vodka in our water bottles - but we found out (by reading other message boards) that the same thing (including the justification that fans could be taking in liquor) happened to several other fans.

I understand the reasons for it; I know that this is common at other ballparks; I know that other ballparks don’t allow any drinks at all. My objection is that they have not publicized this fairly drastic change in policy, and that they insist that it has “always been like that” when that is completely and totally untrue.

They have not said you cannot bring in empty bottles and fill them at water fountains, so I would urge you to consider that as an option (which is what we are going to start doing, along with bringing powdered drink mix). For all of you saying, “What’s the big deal?” these are the kind of expenses that add up if you go to 30+ games a year.

I understand completely….  I had problems final day at Shea and on opening day.  I brought RC cola soda of my youth at Shea…..

Thank you for the heads up! I hope its still ok to bring in SEALED bottles. What I am doing now is bringing bottles of vitamin water or diet pepsi from Walgreens.

I really hope they don’t just decide to ban food/drink altogether because a few booze hounds snuck in alcohol and it becomes a liability.

they specifically said their objection to the bottles was that they were unsealed. if i get there tonight with sealed bottles and i get attitude i am escalating to the head of security.

good luck.  I’d love to see it in writing (have you checked the fine print on the back of the ticket?)

it says “bottles, cans and beverage containers”. but it’s deliberately obtuse. The Red Sox clearly say, “one sealed 16 oz bottle of water per person.” Houston clearly says no food or drink whatsoever (you can bring in water with a dr’s note). Pittsburgh also has bottle size requirements, we legitimately made an error (24 instead of 20) and they let us take it in anyway.

They are supposed to have one of the best PR people in the business. So why is their communication to the fans so crappy?

It is, and has been, under the CITI FIELD SECURITY PROCEDURES part of the A to Z guide.  I believe it was there for Shea too.  No Open Containers.  The security is just lax enough (or not always completely evil) that they don’t always search hard for this.  It sounds like someone recently did just that, and now they’re going to enforce it this homestand before drifting back into complacency.

You can probably rest assure that they will never not allow empty bottles. Jacobs field tried that 5 or 6 years ago. (I think after Browns fanse threw bottles at NFL refs) A woman was hospitalized with dehydration because she could not get to a water fountain. Legal issues ensued and the policy was changed and they put up iggloo cooler full of free water on really hot days.
