ABOUT THAT CLIFF LEE THING.

The alleged ultimatum given was that it had to be decided before tonight’s game in Seattle. So, we sit, and we wait, and we get nothing productive done, while we sit and fume.

Crabby.

Yankees allegedly out. “Another team pushing hard.”

The video above now states my current feelings.

5:09pm: At least it wasn’t You-Know-Who.

How are you holding up?

NEW YORK STATE OF MIND.

This is a lengthy, but absolutely fascinating article, by Seattle Times Mariners beat writer Geoff Baker, about the state of baseball fandom in Seattle. I believe it sprung from the horrific fan interference the other night, where yet another idiot fan reaching out to grab a ball in play cost a team the game (at least the Mariners threw him out, which doesn’t happen enough in my opinion), but it’s worth a read because it’s just another world.

The fact that so many people here got defensive when Cliff Lee made his post-game comments to Brad Adam in New York about how fans in that city don’t need a teleprompter to tell them when to cheer tells me I’m not imagining it. Lee may or may not have been taking a subtle jab at fans here. I don’t know, haven’t asked him and don’t care. It was the defensive reaction of people here, borne out of the experience of fans here not clapping until a video scoreboard message tells them to, that was the real story on that subject.

That’s the number one complaint of one of my best friends in Seattle, who’s also a charter Mariners season ticket holder. It drives her absolutely batty. And the thing is, I know I complain about this at Citi Field (and I know I’m not the only one), but it’s not as true as it is out there, where people (to quote my friend Sarah) won’t cheer unless the scoreboard tells them to, and (from my experience) look askance at anyone who does cheer independently. The kind of colorful commentary you and I are accustomed to out here just doesn’t happen out there. But as much as I complain about the Citi Field security, no one would be coming over to tell me to sit down at the second-to-last out in the 9th inning, because no one behind me would be complaining to security, either.

Worth a read on your off day.

MILEZ IS DED. [7-7-10]

Mets v Reds

“SOH-DAH! WAH-TAH!”

Tonight, the “SOH-DAH!” girl’s cry was augmented by “WAH-TAH!” If you sit upstairs, in the People’s Seats, you know the “SOH-DAH!” girl; some day I will find a way to record her, probably by walking up to her, turning on my phone’s recorder, and asking her to do her thing. I mention her here because when I mentioned her on Twitter, I was greeted with a dozen messages of “I LOVE HER!” and “I KNOW HER!” and “SEE, WE’RE NOT THE ONLY ONES!”

TBF hates her. He never ever noticed her until the one game I started mimicking her. Now he can’t not hear her. “Oh GOD!” he always exclaims, as though he is in some type of extreme pain. “Make it stop!”

VIVA JOHAN!

Two images to share:

1. I’ve been following Joe Petruccio’s blog since its inception and find myself going there first thing after a big loss (or a dismal failure) to see how he’s interpreted the events in his own unique style. It’s honestly my favorite Mets blog in a long time.

It’s all fun and games until somebody pokes an eye out. Or, to put it another way, until Frankie comes in for the save on the road.

SWINGIN’ PARTY. [6-25-10]

Mets v Twins
6-25-10

DSC_0062

I was all by myself at the start of the game up in 514. TBF was in the Shake Shack line, and so it was up to me, and me alone, to boo the opposing team’s starting lineup as it was announced. Unless we’re playing the Phillies or the Marlins or some other obvious enemy, no one in 514 seems to care enough.

The issue with this, of course, is that the Twins are the closest thing I have to an AL team. And Monday night, I will be wearing a Joe Mauer shirt and sitting in Target Field, as I root for them to win against the Tigers. (It’s a long story, and it’s Bono’s fault.) But tonight I was home, and I dearly wanted the Mets to win this game. So, as Alex Anthony intones, “The catcher, Joe Mauer,” I respond: “BOO!”

(You know, I really was trying. But it’s Joe Mauer. It’s like booing a puppy. The Twins fans call him “Baby Jesus”.)

“The first baseman, Justin Morneau.” “Um…BOO!”

DON’T STOP THE VOTING.

Courtesy the delightful @juliaaquadrinoo, comes this gem:

Don’t Stop The Voting
(For David Wright)

Just a Smithtown girl, livin’ in a lonely world
She took on a midnight campaign to get David in the All Star Game
Just a Virginia boy, tonight he lost to Detroit
But he is still an All Star, vote for him anyway

A manager in a press conference room
With him in charge you’d think we’re destined for doom
But you’d get a smile if you saw David Wright
The hits go on and on and on and on
